Taking On The Litter Bugs!

In April 2024, we worked with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) to  install a row of planters on top of 10 Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) blocks on Exhibition Road. These stepping stones for pollinators are part of the South Ken ZEN+ mission to make our neighbourhood greener, more inviting, and more biodiverse.

Volunteers from the Imperial College Environmental Society (ESoc) will be using these planters for a  behavioural study on littering!

Signs will be added to the planters to test whether we can influence rates of littering. We have developed three different signs, ranging from 'strict', 'friendly' and 'informative', which will be switched out every couple of weeks. ESoc volunteers will be monitoring the amount of litter in response to each sign.

Will one sign be more effective than the others?

Can the litter bugs ever really be stopped?

Are the pollinators thriving?

We even had some brilliant volunteers from the local school, Brighton College Prep Kensington, to lend a hand with the litter pick!
