A special moment for urban nature took place on Exhibition Road in March 2026 as Trees for Cities planted its two-millionth tree in South Kensington. The milestone London Plane now stands between the V&A South Kensington and the Natural History Museum, right in the heart of one of London’s busiest cultural districts. It replaces a young plane tree in the same spot that was destroyed by an SUV in May 2024.

The idea for this location was suggested by us at South Ken ZEN+. What began as a simple idea quickly transformed into a collaborative effort that has added a long-lasting contribution to the neighbourhood’s urban environment.

This planting marks more than just the addition of a tree – it’s a symbol of the ongoing efforts to make the area greener, healthier, and more sustainable.

This tree may start small, but as its canopy grows, it will become an enduring part of Exhibition Road, adding character and environmental benefits to the area for years to come. It will provide shade, improve air quality, and support biodiversity, offering a habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife. As our cities expand and face increasing climate pressures, the benefits of urban trees become even more vital.
